November 1, 2026
I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.
EQ NOTE
Mandela learned courage in circumstances where fear was not theoretical, which gives this distinction weight. Courage does not require us to deny fear or perform confidence for ourselves. It asks whether fear will determine what we are willing to do. That leaves room for a more human kind of bravery: one that can acknowledge the risk and still move toward what matters. Perhaps courage is less a feeling we acquire than a relationship we practice with the fear that is already present. Where would you move if you did not need fear to disappear first?
