Difficult events arrive with facts, but our minds quickly add conclusions. A plan changes, and soon it can feel as if the whole future has narrowed with it. Epictetus asks us to notice that second layer: the judgment we place around what happened. This does not make loss imaginary or disappointment optional. It simply gives us somewhere to work. The event may be fixed; the meaning we assign to it may still have room to move. What conclusion about this moment might still be open?
